Vacations In Liverpool, England

Liverpool is a cosmopolitan city in Merseyside in the north west of England.  Liverpool lays claim to numerous world “firsts”. The most well known of these firsts was the first commercial wet dock to appear on the planet.  The docks in Liverpool were, by the start of the 19th century, the busiest in the world with about forty percent of the world’s trade passing through the port. With such marvelous wealth it is not too surprising to discover that Liverpool has some of the most interesting museums and galleries in Great Britain, with only the nation’s capital, London, having more. In the article below I examine some of the other factors which help make Liverpool such a great city break destination.

Lots of people think that Liverpool does not have any  fortified houses, castles, stately homes and historical buildings and although Liverpool Castle no longer exists Liverpool has a few structures which are well worth a visit.

The Fab Four

The Beatles, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, John Lennon & Ringo Starr,  remain one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful acts in popular music in the world. The Beatles came from Liverpool and it is possible to take a look at the homes in which they grew up by taking a trip on one of the tours. Of course there are plenty more attractions associated with the Beatles for example;  The Beatles Shop, The Cavern Club, The Beatles Story and Mathew Street Gallery, plus a few pubs (The Jacaranda in Slater Street, Ye Cracke in Rice Street and The Grapes in Mathew Street) and an immense number of places mentioned in Beatles songs such as Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane.

All fans of the Beatles will be pleased to know that it is possible to enjoy Liverpool bed and breakfast in a Beatles themed hotel.

Other Liverpool Tourist Attractions

To be 100% truthful the list of Liverpool attractions is simply so immense that I could not list them all here. Some of the more popular include Speke Hall, The Merseyside Maritime Museum and The Albert Dock and Knowsley Safari Park, The Tate Liverpool and Liverpool’s two Cathedrals as well as a great many more besides.

Besides all of the local attractions mentioned above the city of Liverpool has long association with comedians.  The list of comedians hailing from Liverpool is absolutely enormous but a few worth mentioning include Craig Charles, Kenny Everett and Alexei Sayle, readers who are older may remember Faith Brown, Stan Boardman and Arthur Askey or Les Dennis, Ken Dodd and Jimmy Tarbuck.
