Tropical Storm Bonnie – Miami Beach, Florida – July 23, 2010
On July 23rd, 2010 Tropical Storm Bonnie became the second named, and second landfalling, storm of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season. Between July 20th and 21st an area of disturbed weather associated with a tropical wave, interacting with a large upper-level low, moved west-northwest over the northeastern Caribbean and southeast Bahamas producing very heavy rainfall and extensive flooding over Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. On July 22nd, the strong shear, that had been preventing development, relaxed as the upper-low moved far enough west of the disturbance. By morning, visible satellite imagery indicated that a low-level center had formed over the central Bahamas and by 11am, the system was classified Tropical Depression Three, while moving west-northwest towards Southeast Florida. By early evening on the 22nd, the depression reached Tropical Storm strength and was named Bonnie. In response to strong southeasterly winds on the east side of the upper-low, Bonnie moved more towards the northwest before bending back towards the west-northwest on the morning of the 23rd. These strong upper-level winds also prevented strengthening and Bonnie struggled to maintain deep convection near the center while remaining a weak tropical storm as it rapidly approached southeast Florida. Between 9am and 11am on July 23rd, the center of Tropical Storm Bonnie moved rapidly west-northwest at 18 mph (16 kts) across Biscayne Bay, making landfall near Cutler Bay, Florida (just south …

@real0988 Thanks so much, Roy! Yeah, there were a couple of gusts that were a little stronger than I expected, but otherwise the storm wasn’t all that impressive. Still it felt good to get out into a tropical system, especially with the new camera. Thanks again.

@exa121 Thanks for the comment. Yeah, the majority of the weather with Bonnie down here in Dade county occurred with that primary rainband that rotated onshore between 9-10am. Similar to you, our highest winds also seemed to occur after the heaviest precipitation, at about the time the center was moving onshore. The highest winds I saw reported were sustained at 47mph gusting to 58mph at RSMAS on Virginia Key.

@vmax135: Well you’re lucky. The highest gust as I say were barely even 40, maybe close but nothing like 58.

WOW, not bad for a little tropical storm! A preview of things to come!

@tornadovideostock Thanks so much, Scott! Yeah… I think Bonnie was just the opening act. Can’t wait to see you out there under the eyewall!

We had some good squalls up here in Palm Bay with gusty winds, about 2 inches of rain fell. But we were too far away to have the conditions you filmed down there. I posted a breif video on my channel of the gusty winds we saw in this area, 160 miles north of Miami.
Love your videos, I always wanted to be a meterologist but never went that route.

@dragasoni Thanks so much! Glad you like the clip. Just watched your video, very cool! I didn’t realize the winds were that gusty so far north of Miami. Thanks again.

@vmax135 Bonnie surprised me as well, given how compact she was. It reminded me of Charley when I looked at the radar echoes and satellite images. Charley nearly killed my Aunts house in South Gulf Cove, and did nothing to my grandparents house 8 miles away in Englewood. No doubt that Bonnie proved her might with near tropical storm conditions during the squalls up here.

@vmax135 can’t wait!!!!

Great way to get everyone in the tropical mood. Because I had some stuff going on the other day, this is the first footage I’ve seen of Bonnie

@liquidstl Thanks Chris! Yeah… even though Bonnie wasn’t all that impressive, it definitely got me in the mood for a big intercept!

@vmax135 I still would been there given the chance.

I think you are at a point now where you could film dust accumulating and it would be intense!
July 26th, 2010 at 11:04 am
@pontiac51 LOL… thanks! Tight shots and good audio are key. That said, I’ll have to work on planning some good filming angles for the next violent dust accumulation event!

How cool! You got some footage of Bonnie Michael! Nice footage too! Always awesome to see another video from you.

How did you keep the camcorder dry?
July 27th, 2010 at 10:17 pm
@VideographyOfStorms Thanks so much, Nathan! Bonnie wasn’t too impressive, but it was still fun to be in the path of a tropical system. Still waiting for the main show which may be coming in the next couple of months.

@SevereStormsMax9 Depending on the scenario, I have different types of gear to protect the camera… from a rain cover to underwater housing. That said, with this storm, I stayed inside my car the whole time and kept myself positioned in a way where most of the rain was blowing away from me. So, I was able to get away with using only minimal covering.

I love the way you have the NOAA weather radio playing in the background with info on the storm. Your videos are second to none. Thanks for your work!

I’m pleased someone was willing to finally shed light on this. I have puzzled over it from time to time.
