Port Dickson Becoming A Popular Destination For Tourists
Port Dickson, located on the Malaysian peninsula, has been increasing in popularity among tourists. The area has a great deal to offer visitors. There are scenic beaches, comfortable hotels, shopping bazaars, excellent restaurants, and historical sites to explore. The population of almost 90,000 welcome tourists in this city located a short one hour drive from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
In addition to driving, the town can also be reached by a ferry that operates between Dumai, Sumatra and Port Dickson. Public transportation, in the form of buses, is also available. Yachts, sailboats, and cruisers can also dock at one of the yacht clubs in the port.
The port has several historic sites of interest. The Cape Rachardo lighthouse, built by the Portuguese during the 1500′s, is still in operation. Visitors who climb the spiral staircase are treated to a wonderful view across the Malacca Straits. Nearby is a footprint in stone that legend states belongs to a warrior from the 1400′s.
The Muzium Tentera Darat is located next to the army camp. Vehicles and aircraft once used by the Royal Malaysian Army are on display. Another site, Fort Kempas, has the tomb of Ulama Sheikh Ahmad Makhtum that dates to the 1400′s. Carved stones are said to depict his struggles and ultimate victory, and there is a strange one that is supposed to be a type of lie detector. And Fort Raja Jumaat features a collection of old muzzle loaders that were once used to defend the fort, and also has a royal burial ground and palace foundations. More antique guns can be found beside the police station.
The Cozzi Port Dickson hotel, or any of the fine hotels in this resort town, can cheerfully make arrangements for guests to snorkel, ski or canoe. Anyone interested in sailing can arrange a temporary membership at the Yacht Club.
There are many excellent restaurants in the city. Some offer traditional Malaysian or Chinese food, but you can even find a Mexican restaurant in town. Most of the hotels also have dining rooms.
Shoppers can visit a market on Saturday nights for a shopping experience to remember. Located near town center, the market offers produce and fresh fish but also offers mementos such as shirts.
The district was once famous for its production of tin and charcoal. However, past operations have not impacted the scenic beauty of the area. Beaches remain clean and lovely, and the jungle is still very much alive. More hotels and other types of facilities are currently being built, and there are some major projects planned that will further increase the popularity of Port Dickson as a tourist destination.
