Summer vacation with a family, especially if it is a large one, can be quite expensive. It is possible to reduce any travel expense and save money if you plan your budget carefully and take on the role of a detective. Savings strategies are endless. This article will focus on three.

Save on Airfare: Trust a Travel Agent

A lot of families discard flying because they think that the cost is way out of their price range. Airfare is one of the expensive travel services of most vacation packages. It is possible to find big discounts if you know what to search for. Is there anyone who knows where to find discounted airfare like a travel agent?

The number of people who book their own travel online has grown tremendously. However, a good travel agent can be a real asset when it comes to finding super deals on airfare. Travel agents are experienced professionals who know the ins and outs of the industry. They know not only the best places to look but also the best day of the week and hour of the day to get the best deals.

Some travelers spend hours and hours searching for a good deal and get excited when they find a fare that is $50 or $100 less. How much is your time worth? A travel agent will cost you nothing since he or she is paid by the airline company. Take advantage of such a knowledgeable resource and reap the reward of flying cheap.

Save on Lodging: Check Out Alternative Accommodations

What types of accommodations come to your mind when you think of lodging? The majority think of hotels and resorts. Many inexpensive alternatives are available to those willing to search a little. You can even find lodging for free. Yes, there are places you can stay for free. Ok. It may cost you but it won't be in currency.

Have a friend or relative who lives in a destination you want to visit. Ask to stay in their home. It is probably not a good idea to make the request to someone with whom you have not had contact in many years. You might drop a hint to get an initial reaction. You can casually ask, "What would you say to having my family come to visit you?" Just to make sure you are being understood, you can add playfully, "If five days is too long, you can kick us out sooner.”

Another “free” accommodation is a home exchange. You stay in home located in the destination of your choice. That homeowner stays in your home. Recently, growth has been significant in this industry. Some websites that specialize in this field have a database of tens of thousands of homes worldwide.

Campgrounds, hostels and dorm rooms are three additional types of accommodations that are cheap. Some universities rent dorm rooms to travelers during the summer months when they have few students on campus. Keep your mind open and you can find some excellent alternatives for inexpensive lodging.

Food: Take Your Own and Save

You could ask your family to fast a few times during the vacation or agree to a juice diet but they probably would not consider it an enjoyable experience. It is not necessary to get your family to forego a few meals in order to save money.

One of the best ways to save money on food expenses during a vacation is to not eat out. Eating every meal at restaurants can really add up. Snack foods and meals that you make yourself is the answer. Create a meal plan with inexpensive foods but ones your family enjoys. Make sure they are easy to store and transport.

Use the tips in this article to save money on airfare, lodging and food. These are the three big expenses for any summer vacation. Now you can reduce the cost of them.

Why I Moved to Kenya

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

I am 29 years old, but my journey actually began when I was a toddler and facinated by animals. I used to annoy my parents to bring me to the zoo every single week. When we used to go I adored bringing my camera along on the journey. Within the timeframe of a few years my whole room was covered in wildlife images.

When I went to college I carried on studying art and photography, I made a decision not to go to university and alternativley got a job down the local sea life centre. The job I was in was outstanding, I was doing a job that I loved but somehow it did not feel like it was enough.

When I turned 25 I received the best gift ever from my parents, safari holidays were an up and coming trend, but to be honest I could have never afforded to go. Once I received my tickets I was absolutely ecstatic.

Once I arrived on my Kenya holidays I just felt that I belonged to be here. The feeling just got stronger and stronger and the more time I stayed there. Personally I did not want to return back home, I mean the weather was better, the people were nicer and I could take advantage of my photography. So do you realise what? I decided not to return back, I have now spent 5 happy years in Kenya and although I do miss my family and friends there is no way that I would ever return back.

I was brought into this world to be part of nature and that is where I want to stay, I am also earning a great bit of cash by selling on my wildlife photos, but not everything is about the money.

kona Hawaii

Hawaii is comprised of six islands, each with a historic background, and each containing its own specialties. Depending mostly on the revenue brought in by tourism, this beautiful country has also been affected by the recent economic recession faced by the world, and Hawaii real estate is one sector that has been hit badly. Many businesses and hotels have been forced to shut down and usually high room prices are now going at discounts all year round.

Hawaii real estate has also got many offers advertised about homes and land for sale in each of the six islands. Recent research on the Hawaii real estate market has shown that prices are still continuing to fall. Of the many points to remember when trying to purchase a real estate in Hawaii one is to remember to have the money needed for the purchase beforehand. Another thing to remember is to make sure you know the condition of the place you are going to purchase. To do this you may want to hire a home inspector to make sure you are paying the best price for what you are getting.

Always research before getting into any kind of Hawaii reals estate investing. There are some very good websites that give you in depth information on what to keep an eye out for. Knowledge of changes in tax laws, inspecting the real estate you are interested in thoroughly and having an accountant who is well versed in the tax code are some of these hints. If you are looking to sell a Hawaii real estate property there are some points worth considering as well. One would be the pricing of the property. Even though it is understandable that you want to make the highest profit you can from the sale of you Hawaii real estate, it is more likely that prospective buyers will be scared off if prices are too high for them.

Pointers When Considering Alaskan Cruises

the Alaska

Some say Alaskan cruises were born when 27-year-old writer Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore documented her first trip to Glacier Bay aboard “The Idaho” in 1883. Of course, naturalist John Muir had been raving about Alaska’s wilderness for years. After Scidmore’s Alaskan adventure, she wrote about the mountains, forests, glaciers and bay in a series of newspaper and magazine articles, which later became a book. America was captivated by this pristine frontier. Now there are over 15 cruise lines that have sent almost a million passengers to Alaska.

“People go to Alaska to see wildlife for a reason, but you see it in many ways and in many circumstances,” said Erik Elvejord, spokesman for Holland America Line. “Don’t expect a lineup of bears when you hit the pier, or pods of whales everywhere the ship goes.” Seeing wildlife in Alaska while on a cruise is all about careful planning, Alaskans say. While animals won’t be flocking toward the ship, you can visit one of the port stop towns for guaranteed sightings.

Carnival Cruise Lines recommends the Sea Otter Quest in Sitka, for example, because there’s a 100% guarantee you’ll see these playful creatures. Holland America recommends the Whale Watching and Wildlife Quest in Auke Bay because humpback and orca feeding grounds are located right amid the Alaskan cruise route. Bears can be a little more hit-or-miss, wildlife experts say. You can take a $100 “Bear Search” at 7am in Icy Strait Point, although there’s no guarantee you’ll spot one. Or you can take a $300 – $1,600 fly-in adventure to Pack Creek on Admiralty Island, Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park or the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary, where bears reliably come to feed on salmon.

This summer, you can find some great deals on Alaskan cruises if you know where to look! Since so many people flood Europe during the summer, you can find great savings. For instance, Holland America Line offers 7-night premium cruises (with stops in Juneau, the Hubbard Glacier, Sitka, Ketchikan and Victoria), with prices starting at $699, down from $1,629! Summer is actually a great time to visit Alaska because the bears are out catching spawning salmon, there are many summer festivals, the flowers are in bloom, the days are longer and the weather’s mild.

When considering Alaskan cruises, you’ll have to decide which port stops are most important to you. Seattle and Vancouver are popular family-friendly port stops you won’t want to miss. In Ketchikan, you will see the Saxman Native Village and The Great Lumberjack Show, as well as hike the Deer Mountain trail. In Juneau, you can board the Mount Roberts tramway, go whale watching and see the Mendenhall Glacier. Sitka has the New Archangel Dancers, the Alaska Raptor Center and scenic trails around Blue Mountain Lake. You won’t want to miss Skagway’s “White Pass & Yukon Railroad” through gold rush country or the Klondike Gold Rush Historic Park.

Arbanassi Architectural Preserve

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Arvanassi is deservedly recognized as one of the most attractive destinations in Bulgaria. Arbanassi is past of the world cultural heritage and is a declared UNESCO preserve. Arbanassi is situated on a high rocky plateau with spectacular views on the medieval part of the old Bulgarian capital Veliko Turnovo. The village was founded in the beginning of the 13th century by Bulgarian boyars (regional rulers) and had a population of 2000. The highest peak of Arbanassi’s prosperity was in the second half of the seventeenth century. The population of the village engaged in international trade with counterparts in the Mediterranean, Russia and as far off as India. The population of Arbanassi developed skills in countless crafts and trades including goldsmitting and textiles. The houses, churches, and monasteries built during that time are proof of the economic progress and prosperity.

In fact, today Arbanassi (Арбанаси in Bulgarian) is known primarily for its historic buildings.  Preserved are 144 houses, 7 churches, and 2 monasteries with rich interior decorations, carvings, and wall-paintings dating back to the 13 – 18 centuries. These unique architectural and artistic monuments are the reason why Arbanassi is visited not only by tourists but also by scientists, archaeologists, historians, architects, and artists. The colorful and picturesque inside gardens are in sharp contrast with the massive walls. Everything, including the furniture, the doors, ceilings and window sills is colorfully decorated with wood carvings. Plaster decorations with flower images adorn the walls. One of the most spectacular buildings are the 17th century churches with their high stone walls and massive oak doors. They harmonically fit in the overall architecture style of the village. The churches are almost without any decoration outside but inside they are luxuriously adorned with incredibly beautiful wood-carvings and paintings.

The seven churches of Arbanassi are some of the most remarkable monuments of Bulgarian art. All churches are built from rock with iron bars on their windows and rich wall-paintings. Rojdestvo Hristovo is the oldest church with severe and ascetic appearance, and some of the most picturesque interior decoration. St. Archangels Mihail and Gavriil is the biggest church while St. Atanas is the smallest one, dating back to 1637. St. Dimitar and St. Georgi were constructed in 1661 and 1621.

Beach in Bulgaria

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Bulgaria has a long coastline along the Black sea bordered by Turkey to the south and Romania to the north. Along this stretch, one can find large international resorts, ancient towns, big cities, and numerous villages. Bulgaria’s resorts are not newcomers to the international holiday market. During its 40 years of communism, the Bulgaria beach destinations greeted hundreds of thousands of Russians, Poles, East Germans and others from that side of the Berlin wall. It took about 10 years after the fall of communism for the tourism industry to reinvigorate, however. There was little change in the resorts for many years. Then, going along with the global property boom, billions of dollars were poured into Bulgaria transforming its coastline, its ski resorts and its major cities. A number of Western European countries including Germany, the UK and Ireland send thousands of tourists that vacation alongside people from the former communist bloc. Bulgarians themselves, after period of tough transition with hyperinflation, banking crisis, declining incomes and sky-high unemployment, started traveling again at the turn of the century. Now, one can see people for all parts of Europe vacationing in these beach resorts.

The two largest resorts are Sunny Beach and Golden Sands. Golden Sands is on the north coast, about 20 km from the sea capital of Bulgaria Varna. Sunny Beach is on the southern coast, also nearby a large city – Bourgas. A number of international flights arrive in both Varna and Bourgas from major European cities year round. A bus ride from the capital Sofia can also get you there within about 6 hours drive. The Sunny Beach hotels accommodate hundreds of thousands of tourists each summer. It offers 5-star hotels, dozens of three and four star hotels and many apartment complexes where tourists can rent a private apartment. Golden Sands remained the smaller resorts as it is naturally constrained by mountains and hills in the adjacent area. However, the mixture of beach and forest is a major attraction to many tourists. Other popular resorts include Albena situated near Golden Sands, and Duni on the southern coast.

Besides the resorts, the two most famous destinations on the Bulgarian Black sea coast are Nessebar and Sozopol. Both of the towns date back to Ancient Greece times and are thousands of years old. Nesebar Bulgaria is a UNESCO – protected historical destination. Both towns are splendidly picturesque built on top of large rock overlooking the sea. The architecture of the towns is unique, making for wonderful walks through their cobblestoned streets and along the promenades surrounding each of them. They also offer dozens of accommodation options including hotels and apartments, as well as numerous restaurants, bars, and shops. There is really something for everyone. All tourists seem to flock there at exactly the same time during the high season in July and August. It may therefore not be a bad idea to visit in May, June or September. The weather is still wonderful, all shops and restaurants are open but the crowds are smaller. And prices are significantly lower.
