Veliko Turnovo: History and Style

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Turnovo is positioned centrally in Bulgaria, close to the Stara Planina mountains and the river Dunav. It is spread over the historical hills of Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora, towering over the wide curves of the Iantra river. The age of the city is about 7 thousand years. Veliko Tarnovo impresses with its original renaissance architecture – antique houses, the unique Veliko Turnovo hotels, situated one above another, towers, splendid museums, and monasteries with icon-paintings that attract tourists from all over the world. Capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, Turnovo offers some of the most abundant and important cultural and historic attractions in Bulgaria. The town also has some of the most attractive areas for nigh life, dining and people watching.

Veliko Turnovo (Велико Търново хотели in Bulgarian) has a rich historical past. According to archeological discoveries, life in that area seems to have began around 3 thousand years ago.c. The original settlers in these parts were the Thracians who populated the area until about the end of the Bronze age. The next inhabitants were the Byzantines. A big Slav settlement was situated here during the VIII a.c. The original establishment of the Bulgarians was set up in IX c. and during the X c. the hills Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora were already richly populated. Veliko Turnovo became the capital of Bulgaria after the two brothers Peter and Assen rose their troops against the Byzantine empire in 1187. Veliko Turnovo was an important stronghold and a cultural center for the following two centuries. The contemporaries referred to it as the The Second Constantinople and The Third Rome.

The most important remnant of these times is the archaeological preserve Tsarevets, a restored fortress that surrounds the hill Tsarvets. One of the main attractions of the fortress is the Baldwin towers where the Latin Emperor Baldwin was captured and locked during the crusade in the early 1200’s. The palace of the Bulgarian tsars was a self-contained fortress with the fabulous Throne Hall and the palace church St. Petka. The Bulgarian patriarchate was situated on the highest place within the fortress. In recent years, the fortress has received further acclaim with a “Lights and Sound” show – a program that combines sound and light effects to reproduce the history of the old Bulgarian capital.

Historic Fort Scott, Kansas – Simple Pleasures, Undiscovered Treasures

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Kansas Tourism

Between 1842 and 1853, Fort Scott was established and garrisoned by the United States Army. As a segment of a stretch of forts running from Minnesota to Louisiana, Fort Scott was one point in a chain of fortifications to guard the Permanent Indian Frontier. Fort Scott was also situated along the Frontier Military Road built in 1836-1845 connecting Fort Leavenworth with Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. The Army decomissioned the fort in 1853 and the structures were acquired by local settlers at auction.

From 1854 and 1861 the populace of Fort Scott suffered from the violence resulting from the clash between free-state abolitionists and pro-slavery proponents. The era described as Bleeding Kansas described the murder, arson and mayhem perpetrated by both sides throughout the conflict to decide whether Kansas would be admitted into the Union as a free or slave state.

Despite admission as a free state in 1861 the violence of the Bleeding Kansas period continued during the Civil War. Fort Scott was re-established as the Union Army district headquarters which included the first African-American unit for the Union begining service in 1863.

Following the Civil War, Fort Scott became one of the largest cities in eastern Kansas beating Kansas City several times as the largest railroad center west of the Mississippi. Fort Scott also became home to 3 brick factories-many of which were used to pave the Indianapolis Speedway and in construction of the Panama Canal not including many of the roads and homes of Fort Scott. Agriculture, small industry and banking have also played a large role in the development of Fort Scott.

The Fort was restored in 1978 and was designated a National Historic Site. It remains the focal point of our historic downtown where they have just completed a $2 million Streetscape Project which included vintage street lights and park benches to their shaded sidewalks.

Interesting Fort Scott tourism places to visit include:

  1. Fort Scott National Historic Site
  2. 1873 Old Congregational Church
  3. Gordon Parks Center
  4. Narrated Trolley Tours

Also in the area – Kansas destinations:

  • Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site
  • Kansas Rocks Recreational Area

Eastern kansas attractions is nationally known for its Fort Scott National Historic Site and its National Cemetery. But, the community that was built around a frontier military fort well over one-hundred-sixty years ago is a thriving community rich in historic heritage, unique shopping opportunities, industry, culture, education and outdoor recreation. Recognized for its small town hospitality, Fort Scott and its residents are even the proud owners of three World Records!

Cigov Chark Bulgaria

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Cigov Chark is a small resort in the western part of the Rhodopa mountains in Bulgaria that has become a favorite off-the-beaten-track destination for Bulgarian and international tourists. It is picturesquely located on the brinks of the Batak lake with wonderful vistas spreading over the lake and onto the mountains. Batak is the third largest lake in Bulgaria with Cigov Chark on one end and the resort Dunoto (the Bottom) on the other end.

Cigov Chark offers opportunities for nature walks, boating, fishing, hunting, and water sports. It is also a ski destination, a welcome alternative to Bansko, Pamporovo and Borovets that are Bulgaria’s main ski resorts. The ski run at Cigov Chark is brand new and has separate areas for beginners and for advanced skiers. Its total length is 1200 meters. The run is equipped with a ski lift. There are ski teachers and rental shops for  ski equipment and slates. Next to the ski run is a convenient parking as well as restaurants where one can have lunch or dinner or simply order a cut of tea or coffee.

Cigova Chark is easily accessible from the town of Batak which is only 7 km away, from the spa resort Velingrad which is 15 km away and from the regional center Pazardjik, 36 km away. Some of the infrastructure of the town is still developing. Also, some of the land around is not yet converted to agricultural production or zoned for development. This has slowed down the speed of construction in Cigov Chark. This could be good or bad depending on whether one likes luxury resorts or places that are a bit on the rough side but are authentic. As it is, Cigov Chark is a great alternative to the main ski resorts and is has something to offer in every season.

Most hotels in Cigov Chark (Цигов Чарк in Bulgarian) are small guest houses which are Bulgaria’s version of Bed and Breakfast establishments and small family-run hotels. Private villas are also made available for rent on a short-term and long-term basis. As can be expected, all of those are significantly cheaper than the larger hotels in the big resorts.

Characteristics of a Good Hawaii Vacation Guide

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

The things that go into making a Hawaii vacation guide are the same things that go into making any good guidebook. The difference is the tropical sweep and scope of America’s paradise in the Central Pacific. The region encompassed by the seven islands of the State of Hawaii is large, and each island is a little different in color and makeup. Good Hawaii vacation guides recognize this, and have common attributes.

To start with, the best guides tend to treat each island in the chain – and remember, there are at least four worth seeing – as a separate and distinct entity. This is a wise decision, as the four of them also have somewhat different terrains and even cultural outlooks. Oahu, which is home to Honolulu, is the island in which most of the population of the state resides. And it combines a very large city alongside a North Shore surfing atmosphere.

The Big Island – more formally known as the island of Hawaii – has at least three different climates, and even a bit of snow, found on the peaks of the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea dormant volcanoes. Kilauea, an active volcano, also sits on Hawaii. Kauai has some of the rainiest terrain, in spots, in the world. And Maui stands as a picturesque example of a classic tropical environment with an easy-going attitude.

Because of all this, the top guidebooks will take each place on their own merits, and cover all the things to see and do which make that particular island unique. The best guides also make an effort to impart a little knowledge about the native Hawaiian culture which has made Hawaii what it is. And all of them try to avoid the trap of falling into just being a big discount coupon book, though all will also have some of them within.

If you fancy a venture out on your own, Hawaii car rental services are usually available at the airport, however you can make an advanced booking online or by phone with a local rental company.

So, now that we know the things that go into making a Hawaii vacation guide, we no longer have to worry about not being able to pick out a good one and utilize it properly. They’ll try to teach a little bit on the native Hawaii way of life, along with something on at least the four main islands in the chain which play host to large numbers of tourists. Hawaii is, after all, a jewel in the Pacific and hard to beat as a vacation destination.

Hawaii vacation packages and vacation guides can easily be booked online. So browse through the web and find one you like. If you are uncomfortable making such a purchase online, many places offer a handy book-by-phone option.

Interesting Tourist Attractions To Visit In Dundee, Scotland

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Dundee has been the site of a settlement for as far back as the time of the Picts. The city of Dundee, the fourth largest city to be found in the nation of Scotland, has a long association with commerce and trade. The 3 main industries, in the city of Dundee, were “jam, jute and journalism”.  Though dundee can be described as city which is post-industrial it has something of a mixed economy and it still has a large percentage of its population employed in the manufacturing industry (by comparison with the rest of the country), roughly 13.5 percent. In recent years the tourist industry has started to become a rather important part of the local economy and there are a large number of hotels offering bed and breakfast accommodation in Dundee and in the text below I discuss the reader to 3 Dundee visitor attractions; Verdant Works, Discover Point Visitor Centre and Sensation Science Centre:

Discover Point Visitor Centre

Discovery Point is a immensely interesting and award-winning Dundee visitor attraction which explains the tale of one of the most heroic  exploration voyages ever, the story of the world famous Antarctic explorer, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, and his first ship,  RRS Discovery. On March 21st, 1901, the Discovery was launched from the Panmure Shipyard, Dundee. Captain Scott and his crew set off for Antarctica on August the sixth nineteen hundred and one, reaching there in January nineteen hundred and two. The RRS Discovery is the major element of the visitor centre having been fully renovated from the top to the bottom. Steep stairs and narrow passageways can cause difficulty in getting about for those with mobility issues, luckily, visitors will find there is an audio visual presentation on the dockside.

The Sensation Science Centre

If you are searching for a tourist attraction that the whole family can enjoy, then Dundee’s Sensation Science Centre is the ideal solution. Sensation Dundee is the only science centre in Britain which is focused upon the body’s five senses. You can discover the miracles of sciences  through the use of the human body’s senses with the aid of in excess of eighty interactive exhibits. You will also find live shows of scientific experiments and demonstrations, demonstrating how common ingredients found around the home can be used to amazing effect. People interested in surgery are even able to have a go at trying keyhole surgery. Sensation brings science to life in lots of incredibly fascinating ways.

Verdant Works

Verdant Works  was, once, a working jute mill. At it’s peak, during the eighteen sixties and seventies, the industry in Dundee had a workforce of roughly fifty thousand people in over sixty factories dispersed across Dundee. These days,  Verdant Works brings this industry to life, utilising a range of displays which include, interactive computers, original machinery and film shows. This remarkable museum was once home to 3 extremely large steam engines which ran seventy looms and nearly 3 thousand spindles.  There was also five hundred workers working there, spinning and preparing jute then weaving it in another factory over the road. Restoration of the jute mill began in nineteen ninety two and it first opened its doors to the public on the sixteenth of September nineteen ninety six.

If you are planning to have a weekend break in Dundee you will discover plenty of online hotels and guest houses providing bed and breakfast accommodation in Dundee. You will discover a broad range of Dundee hotels and guest houses at http://dundee.hotelreservationhelper.com/
