Travellers who are in the know when it comes to travel tips and bargains are in with the chance of being named ‘Britain’s Savviest Traveller’. Travelzoo – the website dedicated to sourcing and sharing top travel deals – is running its savvy traveller competition to reward bargain hunters. At the same time, Travelzoo’s experts have been offering their own insights into how they source some of the cheap travel deals featured on the site.
The advice on offer is wide ranging – whether you want to make the most of a cruise cabin upgrade or bag yourself the best airline seats. For instance, to give yourself the best chance of an upgrade when flying with a scheduled airline, book a premium economy seat – as these tend to be the smallest cabins so often get overbooked.
If a cruise holiday is more your style, then be sure to ask about all the various cabin upgrade options on offer. While you may decide it’s not worth an extra £40 for a nicer inside cabin it could well be worth an extra £100 for an outside cabin with stunning sea views.
Another money-saving airline tip from the Travelzoo team is always book a return flight, even if you’re not planning to use it, as single tickets can often work out more expensive. Also, flying during the week rather than at the weekend is generally cheaper.
Meanwhile, swapping your old mobile for air miles could see you jetting off on holiday sooner than you think, thanks to some of the phone swop schemes around at the moment. It can turn out to offer a much better return than selling the phone second hand.
The search for Britain’s Savviest Traveller runs until Friday, 9th July, 2010. Travellers can take part by submitting up to 300 words about why they are the best at seeking out travel deals and tips. The competition will also be running in Germany, France and Spain. A dream holiday for two is on the cards for the winner in each country, as well as being awarded the title of the savviest traveller in their country. For the UK winner, Mark’s Travel is sponsoring a two week holiday worth £5,000.
